How Nothing
Becomes Something

(And how you can help)

Thanks for Nothing started as a simple house party. Every summer, for more than 10 years, it was just friends, drinks, games, and staying up late together.

In 2024, we wanted to host a murder mystery. That murder mystery turned into a competition, which became handmade puzzles to solve, and those puzzles (and the party) suddenly had a new theme every year.

In October of 2025, we hosted fifty guests for The Other Side, with teams solving occult mysteries and uncovering ritual items to banish a demon and save the world.

What started as a casual house party has become an event that takes more than a year to plan, design, and create.

Making The Magic

Aside from the puzzles themselves, there are two creative forces that make Thanks for Nothing possible:

Worldbuilders 🏔️
Creative eyes with technical know-how

Worldbuilders
Creative eyes, technical know-how

Our Worldbuilders are the alchemists behind the atmosphere of Thanks for Nothing. They transform the event space with custom props, curated décor, immersive lighting, atmospheric effects, and soundscapes—every detail working in concert to transport guests to another world.

They’re also the hands behind our coveted, one-of-a-kind prizes that event winners take home when the night is over.

Worldbuilders are why guests walk in and say "holy shit."

Producers 🎬
Architects of flow and experience

Our Producers are the reason our guests are able to experience a smooth, magical event together. They manage guest registration, volunteer coordination, event schedules, and party logistics—all the infrastructure that makes the magic of the big day feel effortless.

They’re also among the very few who get a peek behind the curtain and understand how everything comes together.

Producers keep our trains on the tracks, full steam ahead.

About The Puzzles

We get asked about helping with puzzle creation more than anything else and we love that people are excited enough to want to contribute.

Creating puzzles for each year's event is like writing chapters in a book. Every puzzle connects to every other one—difficulty curves, hint systems, narrative continuity. When you change an element in one, you may need to adjust five others. Books aren't written by committee or one chapter at a time by different authors. They require a consistent voice and vision, and so does each year's Thanks for Nothing.

Adding more people to our puzzle-making process—even talented, dedicated friends—means more coordination, more deliberation, more overhead. This makes the process slower and less enjoyable for us.

We do this for fun, and if it starts to feel more like work, we'd rather just do something else. Another part of the fun is keeping the puzzles a secret, so that everyone—including TFN crew members—can play and be surprised on the day of the event.

Joining The Crew

If you're interested in joining the Thanks For Nothing crew as a Worldbuilder or Producer, let's talk about what that might involve for our next event.

Let's make some magic!
